Australia: where most Malaysian families still land.

Forty-two percent of Zestplex's overseas placements last cycle went to Australia. The reasons rarely change: trusted education, generous post-study work rights, a Malaysian-friendly culture, and direct flights home from every capital.

The honest case for Australia.

The Group of Eight universities — Sydney, UNSW, Melbourne, Monash, ANU, UQ, UWA, Adelaide — sit comfortably in the QS top 100. Beyond the Go8, Macquarie, RMIT, UTS, QUT and Deakin offer specialised strengths (Macquarie for actuarial science, RMIT for design, QUT for creative industries).

The 2024 changes to the Temporary Graduate visa added one to two years for STEM and select healthcare masters graduates. For most Malaysian engineering students this means up to four years of post-study work eligibility, which has reset our planning models.

Where families end up choosing.

Sydney still leads our placements by volume. Melbourne competes hard, especially for design, arts and law. Brisbane and Perth attract families who want a Go8 outcome with lower living costs — a Monash Brisbane bachelor's at AUD 28k-31k versus Sydney at AUD 40k+ is a real saving over three years.

FAQs about Australian study.

What IELTS or PTE score do I need?

Most Go8 undergraduate programmes ask for IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or PTE Academic 58-65. Health and education degrees often require IELTS 7.0+. We help you pick the test that suits your strengths — some Malaysian students score higher on PTE because the marking is more predictable.

How does the Subclass 500 visa work?

You apply after receiving a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Required documents include the CoE, financial evidence (tuition + AUD 24,505 living costs for the first year), OSHC, English-language proof, and a Genuine Student Requirement statement. Processing time is typically 4-8 weeks for Malaysian applicants.

Can I work while studying in Australia?

Yes — up to 48 hours per fortnight during semester (uncapped during scheduled breaks). Common student jobs are hospitality, retail and tutoring. Sydney and Melbourne offer the most opportunities; regional cities tighter but living costs lower.

How do post-study work visas work now?

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) gives two years for most bachelor's graduates and three to four years for masters in eligible fields. STEM masters in computer science, engineering, agriculture and select healthcare disciplines now attract an extra year (effective 2024 rules). Most Malaysian students use this window to gain experience before deciding on permanent residency.

Is health insurance compulsory?

Yes — Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory for the duration of your visa. Single-cover policies start around AUD 750 per year. We compare BUPA, Medibank, Allianz and nib coverage with your advisor.

What about scholarships specifically for Malaysians?

Beyond university-specific merit scholarships, the Australia Awards (DFAT), Endeavour Postgraduate, and Destination Australia awards are open to Malaysian applicants. JPA covers selected Australian universities; check your eligibility list with us.
